Daniel Scocco over at Daily Blog Tips has written a cool e-book which covers the basics of blogging and how to get started with it. Although the information is mostly for newbies, it is still worth reading. Daniel covers everything from getting started, promotion, networking, advertising, etc. Best of all, the e-book is free, all you need to do is subscribe to DBT here and receive the book right in your inbox.
It is not rocket science that a good design can change the fate of a blog. That is the reason why I always emphasize on a good design on my blogs. When I started blogging, I wanted a theme which would have built-in options of integrating video, flickr, ad management, etc. I wanted all that because I was a noob when it came to coding and I wanted everything out of the box. I was able to find many themes which filled some of my criteria but they all were in the range of $150+ I then stumbled upon a design company which was selling themes for reasonable costs (read below $75) and I really liked one of their themes which had all the options I was looking for. I purchased the theme for $70 and the rest as they say is history.
