Blogging Truths – Honesty Is The Best Policy

by fas on August 22, 2009 · 18 comments

Nearly everyone of us agree with this world famous line “Honesty Is The Best Policy”. I guess even your parents, elders and teachers told you so. May be some ADs on TV told so too (One of the TV ADs in India did it). But when it comes to being honest more or less all people choose to be dishonest.

Honesty Take this for example, your friend (or rather girlfriend or boyfriend) asks you if he/she looks good in his/her dress. Though he/she doesn’t look good in the dress you say “You look awesome or fabulous“. You were dishonest but you didn’t hurt you friend’s feelings. So we can say being dishonest was good idea. Now extend this situation further. Your friend attends a party and some people make fun of him/her due the dress and that hurts your friend. Now in this situation you will say you should have been honest.

From the above example you may have clearly understood that its not easy to decide whether to be honest or not. That was a real life situation. But what is the condition in our blogging world.

  • What is the role of being honest?
  • Up to what extend you should be honest?
  • Is little dishonesty good?
  • What really is honesty?

Well we are here to discuss that only.

I am a strong believer of “Honesty Is The Best Policy”. I believe that being honest is the best idea. But this doesn’t mean that I will be always honest as being too much honest may hurt other or harm me too. Anyways in this blogging world being honest is surely the best idea. Though you cannot be always 100% honest but you should always try to be as honest as possible. Some people (mostly who just wants to earn money) think that by being honest they are killing their earning. Well they may think that they are right in their place but actually they are not. They may earn some money in short tern but not in the long run.

Being a blogger our main goals are creating good contents and getting love and respect from your readers. These things are best achieved by being honest. Honesty help in the long run and eventually leads to success. To be a good honest blogger you first need to understand what does being honest actually mean. As a blogger being honest means you do not lie to you readers. Let me take my blog for example. I do many reviews. I can be dishonest and brag about some product and may be earn some cash but it will eventually kill my blog and even my name in the blogging world. If I be honest and tell people about all aspects of the product I am promoting, my reader would respect them and in long run many more people will appreciate this. I will not only be able to earn from it when I promote, but in future too.

Honesty Is The Best Policy

You should be honest with your blog stats as well. I have seen some lying about their blog stats but this lie does not last long. You shouldn’t call some work or tips yours just because you are publishing it (I am assuming its someone else work). Beacuse when you get caught in this act, commentators would put bad comments on you post. You should verify yourself by asking few questions to yourself. Just sit down for a while and ask yourself.

  1. The blog you are running, is it based on lies?
  2. The post you are witting, does it hide any truth that may harm your readers?
  3. Are you being honest with yourself?

The final verdict is that you should testify yourself and try your best to be a honest blogger. What is you take on this? Is honesty the best Policy? Lets see how honestly you respond to this post.

Ya being honest is difficult but overcoming your difficulties make you bigger in life. I am also not saying to be 100% honest but try to be as honest as possible.

The entire concept behind lieing about stats or anything of that nature is pretty dumb even in theory, the only one being fooled is the person lieing.

Honesty is important in any type of businesses, online or offline. And blogging is definitely included in it. Joseph Sugarman, one of the most famous copywriters, even said that honesty in a sales copy would increase conversion. So, yeah, great article.

I just want to share one incidence which happened with me yesterday!
One person mailed me asking me to review his product. He mentioned that he had visited my blog at http://www.techfreak.com and he loved it a lot!
But actually speaking my blog is at http://www.techfreakstuff.com I don’t understand how he visited it at a different URL!
This shows how important it is to say the truth and a lie gets caught some time or the other. If you lie and get caught, it leaves a bad impression on the person, as it left the impression of that person on me!

Dude thanks for sharing your experience. I had also a similar situation. I will share mine soon.
